Background
Common
in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, Conservation
International’s (CI) ngali ("naa-lee") nuts come from
the Makira Conservation Area on the island of San Cristobal (locally
called "Makira") in the Solomon Islands.
This double chain of mainly volcanic islands lying in the humid
tropics of the South West Pacific forms part of Melanesia. Approximately
300 villagers from 30 villages sustainably harvest the nuts for
sale to the processing factory.
Economics
The
Solomon Islands, still largely covered by tropical rain forests,
is a primary target of the timber industry, as most of the land
is still owned by indigenous peoples who desire both cash and development.
More than 60 percent of government revenue comes from tariffs on
log exports to Japan and Korea. The Maruia Society (now the Ecologic
Foundation), Conservation International and the Solomon Islands
Development Trust have joined in a project, which has its focus
in part on providing technical and marketing assistance to the Makira
Conservation Area project staff.
By
purchasing products containing Ngali Nut oil, you are helping to
preserve and protect precious tropical rainforest and the unique
creatures that live there.
